Australia Skilled Migration

The Australian Industry Group said that Australia needs 2.8 million skilled people over the next decade. Records revealed that 68 percent of people migrating to Australia are skilled workers with the biggest number coming in from employer sponsored and skilled independent visas.

In the 2011 census, 171,233 people in Australia are Philippine born with the most number living in NSW with 70, 388 Filipino migrants. Victoria took second place with 38, 002 Filipinos. Filipinos earn a median individual weekly income of $673. This is above the income earned by Australian born citizens at $597 and those from other countries at $538.

There are different visa types available for Filipinos:

1. Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
2. Skilled Sponsored visa (subclass 190)
3. Skilled Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 489)

If you are interested to migrate to Australia:

1. Check if your occupation is in the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). If your occupation is not found this year, it is possible for it to appear in the next year. The SOL changes every July and it may add or delete occupations.

2. If your occupation is there, do a self assessment:

Are you below 50 years old?
Are you proficient in the English language? (Check English requirement from your assessing authority as well)
Do you have the qualification and experience needed?
Can you get at least 60 point mark?

3. If you think you have all the requirements and you will be able to pass the 60 point mark then visit the website of your assessing authority. Check their requirements including documents needed to assess your skills and the fees that go along with it.

4. As soon as you complete all requirements, contact them and pass documents to your nominated occupation’s assessing authority

5. If you are given a positive evaluation, lodge your Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. These steps are all done online. After submitting your EOI, your application will be in a pool together with other applicants. This will be valid for two years.
Your occupation and points earned will be matched against the other applicants or candidates. The higher your points the faster you’ll get an invitation to apply for a visa. Ceilings may be in place depending on the occupation, the number of applicants and the number of workers needed.

6. Once you receive an invitation to apply for a visa you have 60 days to lodge your visa application. Visa processing times vary depending on the kind of visa you applied for.
